Description
Snow & Ice Sculptures
by Elwin Designs

The snow sculptures shown here were made by first packing up a large pile of snow in a similar manner as with sand sculptures, small layers at a time. The larger snow piles are best left to sit and harden for a few days until they are carved using picks, pick axes, shovels and chisels for any fine details. The small snowman size piles are usually done when it is warm and the snow packs really well so no waiting is necessary.

The small ice sculptures are usually carved from a single block of ice that is purchased from ice companies which is 11 x 22 x 44 inches in size and weighs 330 pounds. The larger ice sculptures require stacking these blocks of ice to the size of the sculpture before carving is started. The typical tools for ice carving are a chain saw, chisels, rasps, and a power carving tool similar to a dremel. And let's not forget the rain suit, rubber gloves and very good winter boots. Being waterproof is essential when out in the cold, trust me.
