Oliver Meller Fine Stone Sculptures
.
Welcome to Oliver Meller Fine Stone Sculptures
Oliver at Work
I am an artist and sculptor specialising in the creation of
intrinsically beautiful works of art shaped from natural stone. My works
are all individually created by me from carefully selected stones from
across the UK, in my workspace not far from the picturesque rural town
of Wortley.
My work is rooted in our relationship with the
natural world within the context of the British landscape. Domesticated
and Wild animals are used as symbols of this relationship in a
contemporary take of our instinctive, and ancient connection with
nature. I'm inspired by historic use of animals in art, specifically
from prehistoric bronzes which are highly stylised. My forms are
exaggerated in a way so as to capture the spirit and movement of the
animal, be it vigour and strength, or good humoured playfulness.

I
am Happiest when choosing the right piece of stone and turning it into a
creature that I can have a conversation with. My aim is for the stone
to convey emotion.

Oliver
Meller is an emerging artist who combines a deep understanding of the
natural world, contemporary, historical, and prehistorically, with a
finely honed skill in the shaping of stone.
Oliver has studied
art from a young age and was a frequent visitor to cathedral, churches,
and museums in search of stone figures and decorative art; he was caught
by the idea that the workmanship and process of design were old and he
was caught by the idea that the workmanship and process of design were
old, and that he could still look upon these pieces of art, sometimes
hundreds of years after their creation, in wonder. There form and beauty
seemed like an enduring message and it captured his imagination.
In
order to turn his sketches and paintings into sculpture and relief
tablets Oliver needed to acquire the knowledge and skill that would
allow him to work in his chosen medium. Following an Art Foundation
course he successfully studied stone carving full time in Dorset for two
years and also took courses with the Sheffield based ceramicist Karen
Heisenberg. Producing three dimesensional items from fired clay allowed
Oliver to play with form and shape in a way not possible in the
geometrical world of stonework.
Nowadays all olivers sketches are
first transformed into clay maquets before a chisel is even picked up.
Such a meticulous approach to his craft explains the high standard of
his sculpture, but it doesn't explain the flowing vitality and energy
present in every single piece. For this we have to look in the meadows
and woodlands of Yorkshire and the Peak District where Oliver spent
teenage years helping his master craftsman dry stone waller farther, and
also back to the very origins of growing human consciousness when past
artisans in the stone and Metal ages produced beautiful images and
objects that although simple and primitive in their conception carry an
aura of sophistication and meaning which stays with them still.
It
is this sense of contained power coupled with the idea of potential,
imminent, animation that Oliver strives to create in his own art.
Sometimes an artefact or animal or relief scene is realistic with its
own recognisable scale, others are more fanciful and stylistic; all are
poised in arrested movement, caught in time to be looked at touched,
admired. Another strong influence comes from Norse design, and many of
his pieces are covered in elegant scroll work, much of which has a
direct origin in the magnificent wood carvings integral to Norwegian
Stave Churches.
The ever present conflicts between the older,
wilder, feral, and the domesticated are a main source of creativity.
Oliver relishes the opportunities he sees here to produce beautifully
potent creatures that while not anthropomorphic, may often have a
deliberate essence of the human about them and a completeness that
reconciles that conflict.
