The sculptural form of my work is the result of observing natural phenomena such as gravity, wind, pressure and energy flow. Glass is an ideal material to record these forces but I am inspired by a variety of materials such as porcelain and plastic. The latter has been useful in playing on a larger scale outdoors.
My aim is to create work that becomes part of the environment in which it is placed. Though my work doesn’t directly aim to imitate nature, it seeks to reinforce our connection with it. Often I find ways to subtly camouflage my outdoor pieces by applying mirroring, enamels and sandblasting so the work begins to merge or compliment its surroundings. I use several materials to support the glass such as metal, rubber, concrete and wood.
After working for many years as a graphic designer both in California (my birthplace) and the UK, I went on to receive a first class degree in 3 Dimensional Design in Glass from University College for the Creative Arts in Farnham in 2005. Aside from the work I produce for exhibitions, I am interested in commissions (especially from garden designers) where I can respond to an individual setting, be it foliage or architectural space.
