Lendon Scantlebury
Starting life in Barbados has left
me with strong memories of the freshness, brightness and vibrant colour
of these early years. The people there have a togetherness as a
community, because of the small size of the island.
The
memories of the salty sea smells, the heat and the cooking smells all
mingled together, have powerful connotations for me. The energy and the
facial expressions as well as the voices are memories that are strong.
Coming
to England I noticed that everything here is much more muted. In my
paintings I try to bring out the bright freshness that I once
experienced. The light is so strong and the colours so vibrant, it
reminds me of where I came from and who I am, and it gives me a sense of
well being.
We need to take time to notice the changing
environment and 'watch the clouds go by' because here we move so fast. I
don't hear people talk enough to each other about those things. In
'paradise' people move slowly, there is no need to hurry.
There
is a reason why I paint figures with no features; it is because here we
don't express ourselves the way I remember as a child. What I try to
capture is the essence of the person and their body language and for me
that says more of the truth.
Sculpture
Lendon has been a sculptor for many years, owning his own foundry at a point in the 1980's.
His
sculpture has a bold presence and relate to his fascination with the
circle of life. He has a preoccupation with hands and feet, capturing
moments in time with his cast sculptures of a child's feet. The
qualities of an old boot hold memories of their owner and take on layers
of life.
