Jenny Pickford artist blacksmith
I am an independent self-employed artist blacksmith, working from rural Herefordshire for clients around the country.
I combine traditional craft blacksmithing with newer technologies to create sculptural shapes that often verge on fantasy while being rooted in the natural.
I mainly work in galvanised forged steel and blown glass. What attracts me to these materials is their malleability in the plastic state: the heat from the forge and the furnace seem to breathe life into inert material, giving it an organic form.
My work is about contrast and sometimes contradiction in the natural world – delicacy with weight, fragility versus strength, hard edges and soft lines, beauty against danger. I like the idea that something can be both alarming and alluring. This kind of duality exists in all life and structure.
This is the thinking and, just as importantly, the feeling behind what I do. I want my work to have a special drama, a thought-provoking uniqueness that can stand on its own, but can also bring a touch of magic to any outdoor space.
