Jennifer Tetlow was introduced to the possibilities of carving and sculpting in stone many years ago as a consequence of living in an area with a strong history of quarrying and tradition of stoneworking. She became a full-time sculptor in 1999 and is self-taught.
All pieces are crafted from natural stone, a fine grained, honey coloured Yorkshire sandstone, chosen for its durability and fine weathering qualities.
The stone is hand carved, using traditional tools and methods, each piece having the wonderful individuality and character special to work created from a natural raw material.
The range of garden ornaments and sculpture are designed to make special features or add finishing touches to a garden, to embellish and personalise .
The word 'Sculpture' is derived from the Latin sculpere - meaning 'to cut', or 'to carve out'.
In working stone, Jennifer Tetlow favours this very literal meaning of the word sculpture, from the conception of a piece to the chiselling down from a solid block until the desired shape is achieved.
Her choice of stone as a material to work with is in part due to its durability, and she strives in her sculpting to get some quality that is worthy of this permanence.
Jennifer Tetlow uses basic hand tools for carving, first roughing out the shape, then refining and cutting the detail, and lastly smoothing with fine chisels and abrasives.
Sculpture
Jennifer Tetlow carves sculpture in stone, using a fine grained sandstone which enables the smooth, rounded shapes found in her animal and human forms. She also works in Soapstone.
Pieces are chiselled to create original artworks inspired by the intrinsic qualities of stone and the diversity and fragility of the natural world.
Sculpture may be selected from pieces in the gallery or she can be commissioned to carve a work based on your own inspirations.
